How to Get Pregnant - Home Pregnancy Tests

Home pregnancy tests work by measuring a natural hormone called human chorionic gonadotropin - hCG - in your urine. This hormone is found in the urine of pregnant women, but it is not found in the urine of women who are not pregnant, so that is why it can be used as a test for pregnancy.

Despite the claims of some home pregnancy test kit makers, these tests will not accurately test for pregnancy on the first day of a missed period. These tests are not really reliable until used a full week after your missed period.

Home Pregnancy Tests and How They Work

Home pregnancy tests look for the presence, in your urine, of a natural hormone called human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG). This hormone is produced by cells in the placenta and first enters your bloodstream when the fertilized egg implants in the uterus. This happens on average about eight to ten days after fertilization. After the egg implants in your uterus, the amount of hCG in your body then starts to increase rapidly for the next few weeks, doubling in quantity every two days.

Bood Tests vs. Urine Tests

Blood tests are performed at your clinic and they have a 99% accuracy rate. These tests can detect pregnancy earlier than most urine tests; as early as seven days after you ovulate and still provide accurate results. HCG can be detected in your blood around 10 days after you conceive.

So how do all these tests get away with claiming to be accurate so early in pregnancy?

They don't. They really only claim to be "greater than 99 percent accurate" in general, and then separately, they suggest that you can use them as early as the day you miss your period. According to the current Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulations, in order to claim that a home pregnancy test is "greater than 99 percent accurate," the manufacturer only needs to demonstrate that the test performs as well in the lab as an existing test more than 99 percent of the time.
