Ovulation tests help you to identify the two days of your cycle when you are the most likely to get pregnant.
Just before an egg is released (ovulation) there are changes in your body as it prepares for the new egg. Ovulation tests work by being able to detect the change in one of your hormones, called luteinizing hormone. This hormone can be detected in the urine, and so it makes a perfect marker for knowing when ovulation will occur.
What happens is that LH levels rise dramatically about 24 to 36 hours before ovulation. It is, in fact, this "surge" of luteinizing hormone that triggers ovulation. Reading your LH surge with an ovulation test allows you to predict the most fertile days of your cycle — the two days beginning with your surge.
You can maximize your chances of becoming pregnant if you have intercourse within 24 to 36 hours after detecting your LH surge. Timing is one of the most important factors when you're trying to get pregnant.
