I know the pain of not being able to get pregnant.  Getting pregnant was difficult for me, but I eventually discovered how to get pregnant in a natural, holistic way.

Pregnancy: Remedies & Natural Medicines: The Link Between Zinc & Male Fertility

Couples wondering how to get pregnant faster will be amazed at the role good nutrition can play in increasing fertility. Why overlook infertility remedies and natural medicines if they can naturally boost male fertility? This article looks at the research [1] on the role played by zinc in increasing male fertility.

Statistics show that the male partner is responsible for about 40% of infertility in couples unable to conceive after at least one year of regular, unprotected sexual intercourse. Some typical causes of male infertility are low sperm count, poor sperm motility, antisperm antibodies and poor sperm quality. Adequate zinc levels have been positively linked to improved sperm quality, quantity and motility.

Aphrodisiacs, Oysters and Zinc:
Throughout history oysters have been attributed magical powers in male potency, sexual endurance and fecundity. Research confirms that link between male fertility and eating oysters is no myth, in fact oysters provide more zinc per serving than any other food. The evidence linking adequate zinc and male fertility is well documented in numerous research studies. To highlight the correlation between zinc and male fertility I am going to focus on the findings of one very convincing study [1] into the effects of oral zinc supplementation. 100 males who were infertile due to defective sperm quality were divided into two groups. One group received 250 mg zinc sulphate [2] twice daily for 3 months, the others received no therapy. The results showed a statistically significant improvement in sperm quality, sperm count, progressive motility, fertilizing capacity and a reduction in antisperm antibodies.

How to increase your Zinc intake:
As zinc levels correlate positively with fertility, it makes sense to consider ways of sensibly increasing your zinc intake. Please be sure to read the disclaimer below carefully. In the interests of optimum health and safety always get the advice of a health specialist before beginning any course of treatment.

A good daily multivitamin and mineral supplement may be an effective remedy to ensure adequate intake of zinc. Off the shelf one-a-day multivitamins contain between 5mg and 11mg zinc per tablet. Remember it takes about 70 days to produce mature sperm, so you need to raise your zinc intake for at least three months before expecting increases in sperm potency.

Best of all is the natural approach: eat foods that are naturally rich in zinc every day. Besides oysters which are the best natural source of zinc (6 oysters contain 76.7mg zinc), try eating 85g lean beef (5.8 mg), 85g dark chicken meat (2.4 mg), 85g pork (2.2 mg), 30g cheddar cheese (1.2 mg), 30g brazil nuts (1.4mg) or 20g pumpkin seeds (1.3mg).

Knowledge is power. However this fertility research will only benefit couples where the males are producing poorer quality sperm (that is sperm with a higher than desired proportion of genetically imperfect spermatozoa) than would be considered ideal.

Up to now the standard advice for couples actively seeking pregnancy is to make love every two to three days, especially one to two days prior to ovulation, to ensure best possible chances of conception. The reasoning behind this sex-every-two-or-three-days regime has been to allow high numbers of sperm to accumulate in the epididymis (tube atop of each testicle). Therefore the focus has been on producing an ejaculate which has a high sperm count, whereby more sperm equals higher chances of fertilisation.

That's the 'abstain from over-frequent sex for enhanced sperm quantity' argument and it has its merits if your male has a lower than optimum sperm count.

Now to the quality over quantity side of the equation. All men produce some sperm which is imperfect, perhaps weak, with two tails, poor swimmers and so on. What if your man has a high sperm count but the DNA quality is lower than optimal? Here is some interesting fertility advice on how to get pregnant for men who want to ejaculate sperm of highest possible DNA quality.

Australian researchers found that ejaculating every day (i.e. daily sex) is a method of increasing sperm quality in individuals whose fertility problems were caused by genetically damaged sperm. That's good news for many couples who want to increase their chances of creating a baby.

Firstly sexual intercourse on a daily basis not only insures there are fresh, potent sperm waiting to fertilise an egg whenever ovulation occurs. Secondly daily sex also raises the quality of sperm in males  whose fertility problems are related to DNA damage of their sperm.

Why may more frequent sex result in better quality sperm? Researchers still believe abstinence allows for increased quantities of sperm, however they also know the quality of sperm declines over time. If your man is producing sperm of slightly poorer genetic quality than average and then that sperm is stored for days in the epididymis (sperm reservoir), exposure to free radicals will further damage the health of sperm. Regular and frequent ejaculation ensures that only newest, freshest sperm of higher genetic quality are available.

If it is early days yet in your quest for pregnancy, you certainly won't know much about the quality or quantity of your partner's sperm. A semen analysis is only advisable if you haven't been able to get pregnant despite frequent, unprotected sex for over a year.

Nonetheless, this research gives food for thought for couples wondering how to get pregnant. You could vary your tactics from cycle to cycle. Some months you could try the route of daily sex for high DNA quality sperm, and other cycles abstain from sex for two or three days to allow sperm counts to increase prior to ejaculation.

Plan ahead! Great sperm takes time!
It takes 70 days (or ten weeks, or almost two and a half months!) to produce mature, virile, tail-lashing sperm in prime condition for fertilisation. So any positive changes your man makes in lifestyle, diet and environment will take about three months to produce results. Furthermore your efforts to produce best-quality sperm need to be consistent and ongoing.

Here are some pointers to ensure his sperm are of premium quality when it counts most - two to three days prior to ovulation or about 14 days before your next period is due.

Start with great nutrition. Adequate protein at each meal, lots and lots of fresh fruit and vegetables, backed up by a daily multivitamin tablet should put the odds in favour of healthy sperm. He'll need trace elements like selenium, zinc and folic acid. Sperm is a quality product and you can't expect him to produce the best if what he is eating is sub-standard processed food. Be sure to wash all fruit and veg extra well to remove fungicides and pesticides. Cut down on extra fats and eliminate all junk food if you can. This may be a time to consider an organic lifestyle for both of you.

Analyse your partner's work and home environment for toxins. Research has shown that both workplace and household chemicals may reduce sperm quality and motility. Does he come in contact with solvents, pesiticides or other chemicals? Solvents are everywhere: keep him away from fast drying glues, paints, petroleum products, lighter fluid, aerosol sprays, surgical spirit and many cleaning substances. Investigate your garden shed, garage and kitchen and rid yourself of noxious chemicals. Toxins and sperm don't mix. Remember, when you want to get pregnant, alcohol, cigarettes and drugs are toxins too!

A healthy, lean and fit body is a factory for fitter sperm. Regular exercise is important but don't let him wear himself out: exhaustion is detrimental to sperm production. Stress too should be avoided as stress hormones are known to damage sperm: fortunately daily exercise is a great way to reduce stress levels. Get the man in your life to wear loose, cotton underwear to keep those testicles cool! No long sessions in hot tubs or showers as excess heat compromises sperm health!

There you have it. You can aim for  better quality sperm. That means adjusting his (and your) diet, lifestyle and environment to promote sperm that is of higher quality and quantity and is more mobile than before.  How to get pregnant ? For many couples it's just a matter of tipping the odds a fraction more in favour of numerous, healthy and virile sperm.

I was fortunate to be able to easily conceive each time I wanted a baby. I did have a miscarriage in between pregnancies, which was, needless to say, very difficult. Going through this common but painful experience gave me a taste of what it must feel like to want a child but be unable to conceive or successfully carry a baby to term. I know people with fertility issues and see the struggles they go through, and often, the huge sums of money they spend on fertility treatments in attempts to get pregnant.

A piece of odd news I came across today made me think of such people. If I had fertility problems and wanted desperately to have a baby, I might just travel to the Ripley’s Believe it or Not museum in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.

Last Thursday, a collection of fertility statues went on display there. The statues are voluptuous, five-foot tall wooden female figures. They were acquired by a US company on the Ivory Coast of West Africa in 1993. The company says they were first placed in its corporate headquarters in Orlando, Florida, and that within months, 13 women who touched them became pregnant.

The display of statues has been all over the world and according to their owner, more than 2,000 women have become pregnant since touching them. The statues will be in Myrtle Beach until March 1st. Couples wanting to get pregnant can touch them for free during business hours.
